I visited The Prairie in early October during Roundtop's fall flea markets and antique fairs. Set on 46 acres of sprawling land dotted with oak trees and ponds, the five existing structures (including a chicken coop) were transformed into dreamy guest quarters all outfitted with the shabby chic furniture and heavenly down bedding she is known for. In 2011, she decided to buy a property with a farmhouse that dates back to the mid-1800s. Ashwell has shopped "the fields" for decades sourcing treasures for her design clients and stores. Why Round Top, TX? Twice a year, a few country roads away, the hay fields are transformed into miles of flea markets and antique fairs with vendors from all over the country. Based in London, with stores in Santa Monica, New York City, Tokyo, and San Francisco, Rachel Ashwell is best known for creating and coining the decorating style "shabby chic." But many don't know that Ashwell also owns and operates a bed and breakfast called " The Prairie," on the outskirts of a Texas town with the population of 80 people, Round Top.
